  2. Question: compare the ways in which feelings are presented in Two poems from list A and Two poems from list B. (Hitcher, Kid) (The Laboratory, My Last Duchess)

This is what I have done so far :)

    Intro
Feelings are presented in the four poems Hitcher and Kid by Simon Armitage, the Laboratory and My Last Duchess by Robert browning. In Hitcher by Simon Armitage feelings are presented through the poem by how envy is shown through violence towards the protagonist’s old self that he is trying to let out and be away with. The feelings are presented in kid by how the sidekick is jealous and envious of the hero and how the structure of the poem is so ironic. In the laboratory by Robert Browning both feelings are shown by how the poet and the protagonist jump tenses during the poem. Feelings are presented in my last duchess by how the protagonist in the poem is jealous and shows envy by how he wants to inflict pain on his ex-lover but even when she is dead he still wants to control her and envies all the men who have seen her or can see her.

    Paragraph 1
Simon Armitage shows how feelings can be presented in Hitcher through imagery. In the poem the protagonist is envying his old self and he is jealous of the freedom he used to have. These feelings are shown in hitcher by how the protagonist is trying so hard to inflict violence on his old self, to get rid of it, in his mind. “He said he liked the breeze” this shows how he says his old self used to like the breeze but because he is now bombarded with business and work he is jealous and he envies the freedom. The word “liked” shows how the protagonist used to like having the breeze and the feel of the wind go through his hair but now he is envious because he doesn’t have any freedom and he doesn’t like the fact that he used to have it but now he doesn’t because now he has a job now so he doesn’t have time to go and do things he used to be able to do. He is jealous of his old self and the freedom he used to have before he had to grow up and go and earn money to live.

  3. Wow Lauren! Your vocal and phrasing has improved hugely! Good girl! What I would say is that I can hear the panic and lack of confidence in your writing! Remember... If you can say it in 5 words don't say it in 10! Your foment is spot on but cut out anything that seems a bit waffily! Just because you are not confident, doesn't mean the examiner needs to know about it! For eg. Your intro can be shortened by saying 'the poets explored feelings of envy felt by personas within the poems- Armitage uses imagery particularly well...' etc- I know it's a contents page but don't use up all those good ideas - you need to hold back the things you really want to develop later! Also, if you're struggling for things to say, discuss the personification a bit further down the lines from that quote- why does Armitage allow his persona to cover up such a strong feeling with beautiful imagery? You can do this Lauren- just believe it; like I do! Mrs J x

  4. Hi, miss! I haven't given in an essay, but I said I was going to post it on here, so here it goes... I'm afraid I've only started an essay (I've actually started two, but I'm finding the same problem with creating the imagery PEE); I've written the intro and a structure PEE, although I'm worried that it's either not advanced enough to get a high enough grade (because I was talking about rhymes), and that it's too wordy...

‘Hitcher’ by Simon Armatige, ‘On my first Sonne’ by Ben Jonson, ‘Havisham’ by Carol Ann Duffy and ‘The Laboratory’ by Robert Browning all present death within their poems, but each in entirely different lights. Whereas The Laboratory and Havisham convey death with an aggressive tone, On my first Sonne contains death with sorrow and loss, and Hitcher is more upbeat, portraying death within the persona, himself, rather than in another.

Rhyming couplets are present in both On my first Sonne and Hitcher, although they do not continue complete throughout the whole poem: Hitcher presents a rhyming couplet in both the first stanza; “fired” and “hired”, and in the last stanza; “fair” and “there”, although none in the second, third and fourth. The rhymes in the first and last stanza bring tempo to the poem, reflecting the order within the persona, experiencing the ‘death’ of the Hitcher inside of him. When the persona picks the hitch-hiker up, the lack of tempo and rhythm in these middle stanzas reflect the sudden lack of order within the persona; the Hitcher inside of him is revived, and sudden disorder contaminates the poem with this lack of rhythm. Once again, order is restored in the last stanza, shown by the rhyming couplet, after the hitch-hiker “[disappears] down the verge”: the Hitcher inside the persona is ‘dead’, once again.
Parallel to this, rhyming couplets infest On my first Sonne throughout the whole of the poem, except the last two (non-existent) lines which should finish the sonnet. This presents the death of the persona’s son, as his son’s life was cut short, so is his sonnet.

Does it make sense? I have yet an imagery point to make, and a conclusion... But I wasn't sure what to do for my imagery PEE. Can you help? Thanks. Jenny x
