  2. I googled "ancien régime" (quote from the begining of 'The Laboratory')...Turns out, it's a political and social system that existed in France before the Revolution of 1789. The poem was written in 1845, and seeing as the system existed prior to 1789, how does it have any relevence within the poem?

  3. It translates as 'old regime' Jen, you could argue that the persona aims to over thrown this 'old regime' and rearrange social order, where women were possessions of men and could do what they wanted with women. Her revenge could be an act of feminism; if she overthrows the type of woman that allows the regime to continue she will be free of social constraints and no longer be a "minion". To be able to do this she must invest her time and will, to act in a socially unacceptable way: as a murderess.Hope this helps! Mrs J x

  4. Just had a thought Jen, just realised I hadn't taken into consideration the date difference like you had! You know what I'm like with numbers! What if the persona had lived throughout one revolution or 'order' and decided that the previous overthrow wasn't enough? So her act of vengeance wasn't enough; if she poisions the mistress then it would represent a new revolution- one that she was in control of? The poisoning could be her revolution; it could be seen as her way of regaining control over her own life?! Does that shed more light? I have to thank Jack for making me have a rethink! Thanks Jack! He pointed out that I hadn't really answered your question! Hopefully this answer, plus the last, can be added together to make some sense!!! Mrs J x
